Dry January Is Over. I Have Thoughts.
Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room.
You finished Dry January.
And now it’s February.
And everyone around you is like, “Sooo… drinks?”
And maybe—just maybe—you’re thinking… ehhhh.
Here’s my hot take as the Boss Lady of Cheeky & Dry, queen of non-alcoholic adult beverages, and someone who spends an alarming amount of time thinking about what’s in people’s glasses: most of us don’t actually miss alcohol. We miss the ritual. The pause. The “I survived today” moment. The thing in our hand at 6pm that signals we’re done now.
Dry January has a funny way of exposing how automatic it all was. Tuesday night? Drink. Long day? Drink. Social plans? Obviously drink. January pulls the curtain back and suddenly you’re like, oh… this was muscle memory, not desire.
So here’s my lovingly delivered challenge:
What if you didn’t immediately sprint back to your old habits just because the calendar flipped?
Not forever. Not dramatically. Just… keep going. A little. Treat it like a game. A glow-up experiment. A low-stakes “let’s see how good this can get” situation. You already proved you can do it—now you get to be intentional about it.
This is where good drinks matter. And by good, I mean actually good. Not sad substitutes. Not “this tastes healthy” nonsense. I’m talking functional, intentional, grown-up drinks that help you unwind, boost your mood, calm your nervous system—and still feel incredible in a real glass. Same ritual. Better outcome.
And here’s the unexpected side effect I did not see coming: when you’re not drinking, your world gets bigger.
Yura and I started seeing more live music. We go out more. We go farther. We don’t do mental math about Ubers or who’s driving or whether we’ll regret it tomorrow. We tried new restaurants that felt “too far” before. We made more trips to see friends on the Eastside because—shockingly—not worrying about driving home drunk is incredibly freeing.
One of our favorite rituals lately? Going to Shibuya Hifi, ordering an excellent non-alcoholic cocktail, and listening to an entire album on vinyl from start to finish. No distractions. No buzz-chasing. Just vibes. It’s intimate, intentional, and honestly better than half the nights we used to spend “going out.”
And for live music, we’re loyal to Tractor Tavern. Are their non-alcoholic options perfect? Not yet. Are they trying? Absolutely—and that matters. My go-to order is a Something & Nothing Yuzu with bitters, and it’s genuinely delicious. Proof that you don’t need booze to feel like you’re part of the scene.
Here’s the thing: alcohol didn’t expand our lives—it quietly limited them.
That extra time, clarity, and flexibility? That’s your cue. Whatever you love and have been putting off—live music, art, friends, late dinners, early mornings—this is the moment. You’re clear-headed now. Use it.
One last piece of real talk before I hop off my soapbox: environment matters. If your fridge is still stocked for your old life, willpower is going to fold immediately. Curate your space. Romanticize your evenings. Stock things you’re genuinely excited to drink.
And yes, I’m saying this with my whole chest: that’s literally why Cheeky & Dry exists. We’re here for the “I didn’t plan to keep going, but here we are” crowd. Come browse. Ask questions. Find your new favorite drink. Feel extremely validated.
Dry January doesn’t have to end because the month does.
You already did the hard part.
Now the only question is:
What are you finally going to say yes to?
